Turkish highways

We've been on the road a bit and seen several different sections of road in the country.  Overall the traffic is not nearly as congested as I expected.  The roads (that we've been on) have been in good condition and some are under construction to be expanded.  The thing that captured my attention this morning (sitting in the front seat of the bus) was the way the traffic moved to pass slower vehicles.

There were two regular marked lanes on the road, but very wide shoulders.  People would kind of drive on the shoulders on both sides of the road and the traffic going in both directions would take turns using the main lane (and some of the lane on the other side) to pass people.  So the red car is passing the green car on the right and the white van is moved over to allow him to pass.  Drivers had to be pretty aware of the oncoming traffic!
