Special surprise # 1

In the afternoon our guide Eyyup had promised a special surprise, and he really came through!  The local association of our interfaith hosts includes the mayor in its membership.  A local marching band dressed in the Ottoman style came out to a park to perform.  They played about 5 or 6 pieces and really put on a good show!  We are told that the Ottoman's first introduced military bands and the idea was later picked up in Europe as well.

The best show was by the drummer on the largest drums (with the banner hanging off the front).  I have video I will try to load when I get home.

Small drummers

Medium drummers (they had two different kinds of drum sticks - baton like ones for a tinnier sound and wooden ones for a deeper sound).

Horns

Katie, from our group, was invited to conduct a song.

This little boy was a part of the crowd that gathered to listen.  He was on his way to the mosque to celebrate his circumsicion.  We saw a lot of young boys in the fancy outfits that they wear for this special rite of passage.
