Pottery shop

We got a special tour of a pottery shop that started with a demonstration by a master potter.  He sat down at his wheel and spun out four different pottery items in about 2 mins flat.  It was pretty impressive.  The clay that is used is a white color and comes from the region of Kutahya.  It is a quartz clay and apparently microwave and dishwasher safe.  After the pottery is dried and fired in the kiln, artists decorate it by hand.  The colors for the paints come from stone dust, not chemical coloring.  This makes the color last a very long time.  The final step in the process is a glass glaze that is painted on and then fired a final time.

This dish underneath has the final glaze.  The one on top has been through the final firing.
