Churches around Copenhagen

We got to view a number of beautiful and very different churches in our walking tour of Copenhagen today.  The first was the National Cathedral, which has been burned down several times since the original structure was built there in the 1100s.  The current structure dates back to 1829 and is built in the neo classical style.  It is in this church that royal weddings are held.  It is a Lutheran church.

The 12 apostles are on the pillars inside the nave. I wish I knew more about the symbolism associated with the different apostles.
Matthew
Bartholomew
John
Thomas

My favorite site inside was actually the baptismal font.

Th back of the sanctuary had an interesting interactive art display.

The second church we saw was the Trinity Church, built with the Round Tower astronomical observatory.  Delaney noticed that the walls that appeared to be marble were in fact painted wood.  It was a pretty good paint job.  We could only tell by tapping on it.

We even got to see in the attic space and bell tower for this church.  Its no wonder so many of these churches have burned down historically!  Look at the wooden beams supporting the roof!

The last church we visited was the marble church, or St. Frederiks.  The dome was beautiful, but it was hard to capture the elegance of the round space with a camera.
