Mother Mary House

After Jesus' crucifixion, there are different accounts of what happened to the Virgin Mary.  One account is that she was brought to Ephesus by the apostle John.  There was a local legend to support this for many years, then it was forgotten.  A nun from Germany, Catherine Emmerich, had visions of a house where Mary resided and wrote an account of these visions.  A archeologist (?) later read this account and started looking around Ephesus and found some ruins that very closely matched these visions.  The house today is largely restored (it was just ruins when it was discovered).  It is a holy site for both Catholics and for Eastern Orthodox believers.

There is also a natural spring here.

View from the road going up to Mother Mary house - modern city of Selcuk by Ephesus.  Vineyards, etc.  Quite breathtaking, but the picture from a moving bus doesn't quite do it justice.
