Palace of Running Waters. This was NOT what we were expecting when we first passed it on the street. With a little more research, we discovered that this magnificent building is one of the early water pumping and treatment plants in the city. In the late 1800s, the city invested a lot of money in a water system with pipes and drains underground. People could not SEE the impressive infrastructure that was being developed, so they decided to build this building in an impressive way to kind of cap off the development project.
It is covered with 300,000 terracotta tiles. These are samples that are in a small museum inside the building.
The building is still an active water containment building and has working tanks. It also holds offices for the water utility.
The structure has a lattice of metal beams that hold 12 water tanks containing a total of 72,000 tons of fresh water.
