Conference at University of Hong Kong

An International Studies Association conference brought me to Hong Kong. I had two panel presentations and they both went well.  Its always fun to connect with new people in the discipline.  As the membership in the association continues to become more international (not just North American), the panels become even more interesting with views from so many different cultures being shared.

The campus was in the center of the city and built on the hillside just like all the other construction in the city.  Lots of levels and escalators.   The university was university was quite large (not sure of the size of the student body), and modern.  This was a student lounge area.  I loved these seats with built in tall backs!
This is one of the classrooms where panels were held.  Good tech, amazingly fast wifi connections, and glass "white boards" in the front of the classroom (wish we had more of these at WSU).
This was the biggest surprise of all...a monument to the victims of Tiennamen Square.  One of my American colleagues who teaches in China brought several of his students to the conference and they were shocked to see this monument here.  It would never be allowed in mainland China.  The features of the people in the monument appear to be deeply sad to me.  Not really tortured, although the twining of the bodies might suggest that, just lost and sad.
Very pretty campus
Many new buildings on different levels, but a handful of "heritage buildings" as well.  I saw very few of these throughout the city!
