Mosquera de Cristo de la Luz



This building was originally a mosque about 1000 years ago.  It was originally just a square building with the front seen in the 2nd picture below.  In the 1000's, it was converted to a Cristian church and the rounded apse was added (below).
The ruins of a an even older Roman road were found under this structure and partially excavated and preserved.

This is one of nine ceiling squares from the original mosque.  Each was unique.

The former cemetery now has a garden in it.  The remains were eventually moved into the crypt in the church after the 15th century.


This is the Sun Gate entrance to the city, near the mosque.
