The staff person who checked us in was from Brazil (I think) and spoke 6 languages. He was very welcoming and got us off on a good foot.
And the best thing of all - great wifi!
Our hostel.
Patio of the hostel. On the second story, with a high fence topped with barbed wire. Very secure. We also had a locked front door that the staff had to buzz you in for 24 hrs/day. It felt very safe. The neighborhood was very mixed, some obviously high end apartments and some not so much. Delaney had the pleasure of seeing someone pee-ing in the alley next to the hotel when we came back one night. The area became very alive in the middle of the day, but closed up tight at night.
The hostel had a lot of character, with a small wooden spiral staircase and various exposed wooden support beams in the interior walls.
The neighborhood was full of fabric shops. They would have all their rolls of fabric out during the day, and around dinner time it would go back in and the 'garage doors' would close. The whole street felt pretty empty at night.
