Day 5 - Interlaken to Lucerne

We got a relatively early start to our final full day in Swizterland.  We caught the 8:55 train from Interlaken to Lucerne.  The first leg ran along Lake Brienz (where Charlene explored the previous day). It was a beautiful morning.

We saw a number of small waterfalls along the way.  We also spotted a few cultivated fields of corn, which I hadn't yet seen. It was growing well.

This is a map of our route.  Starting from Interlaken on the far right of the map and ending in Lucerne on the bottom left (lake shore).

Shortly after leaving Brienz, we paused in a small station and (I think) got connected to the cog rail line and rapidly climbed up the mountain side to go over a pass into the next valley.  You get an idea of the elevation we added in just 5 minutes looking down below.

We came over the top of the pass and we could feel the cogs catch us as we started down the steep slope on the other side.
We saw SO many churches today. Some passing by on the train, and a number by stepping inside as we explored Lucerne and Zurich.  This was in Lungern.

This was at the end of Lungernernsee (lake) looking back up the valley.

I was so grateful the train was not nearly as crowded on this trip.  There were several very narrow passes through the rocks.  If you look closely, you can see the rocks on both sides of the train.

Giswil village (I think).

We are in the lower alps now.  No barren rocks or glaciers.

At some point along the line, I think we switched from cog rail back to regular rail and picked up a little more speed (but not a lot).
The lakes got less glacial blue the farther down.  I loved this patch of lily pads.

The Sarnersee (lake) had a lovely trail all along the water front with lots of little docks, parks and swimming spots.

Church near Sarnen

Arrived in Lucerne at 11:00 to eat lunch and explore a bit.
