Started the day by greeting Scott and Charlene when they arrived from the airport then headed out to Holyrood Palace. The sun came out for some lovely photos, but no photos allowed inside the working palace. We timed our visit well, the palace closes to the public tomorrow when the Queen arrives for her summer visit. They were prepping the gardens for her huge (8000 guest) garden party.
One of my favorite rooms in the palace was a ballroom/gallery which had paintings of all of the monarchs of Scotland dating back to the 400s (?). Many of them had been slashed and damaged by English troops during one of their historic wars, but they had been repaired and restored and made quite a setting in the large hall.
This is part of the Abbey and was constructed in the 1100's. The roof collapsed in the 1700s and it has been a ruin ever since. It stands directly next to Holyrood Palace.
View of Arthur's Seat from the Palace Gardens - spectacular on a sunny day.
Quite a different view of Arthur's seat from when we were here last in the winter! Needless to say we didn't climb it then.
