Ferry Ride North to South Island

Had to check in for the ferry at 7:00 am - a bit early for us to be bright eyed and bushy tailed, but we try...

We walked on board through the car entrance, then climbed four levels of stairs to the passenger lounge areas.

Recyclable wooden boarding pass that we turned in as we passed through the boarding gate.

Main lounge in the front of the ferry - great view out the windows, although I spent most of my time on the top deck.

They had a movie showing for most of the ride in a movie theatre.

View of downtown Wellington from the ferry port before departure.

Shipping at the port - lots of cut logs for loading.

One of the cruise ships that followed us from Auckland.

Views of Wellington as we cleared the Bay

Mouth of the Wellington Harbor

It was clear enough that we could see the mountains on the South island in the distance!

View from the top deck as the ship turned out of the Bay into the main channel.  The shadows on the water were beautiful

First view of the part of the coast that we walked to Sinclair point (in the distance)

Our 6 mile round trip hike started on the right side of the photo where there is a shadow on greener slopes (Owhiro Bay), and went all the way to the point on the far left of the picture (Sinclair point)!

 Sinclair point up closer.

Chop picked up considerably as we passed between the two islands.  Delaney and I went to the front of the ship and the wind nearly took my glasses off my face (and over the side of the ship!)

We slowed considerably as we entered the narrower channel headed for Picton harbor.

This is looking back at the North island from the entrance to the channel to Picton.

Lots more people came out on deck as the wind slowed and the sun warmed everything up.

Approaching Picton harbor. Cruise ship from Wellington now docked here.

Picton Harbor

Our ferry only had a drive on entrance on one side of the ship, so we literally turned a 180 in the Picton harbor so the cars could drive off of the dock.  Our pilot was really good with those thrusters!
