Bascilica and Carillon Tower

After the Doge's Palace, we went to the Bascilica and the Carillon tower in San Marco square. Sadly, there was an elevator to the top of the carillon tower, so we couldn't brag about how many steps we climbed.  It is the tallest point in the city and the view was magnificent.

In the Bascilica, one of the students and I went into the Treasury and saw all of the reliqueries and other precious items.

The domes, walls, and floors were covered in mosaics - beautiful!

This is a close up of a large, detailed candlestick.  I found the saint with the lumberjack saw very amusing...not sure of the symbolism.

Beautiful amber and geode chalice.

Bones of a Doge who became a saint.  The opaque globe in the back right contains his skull which you can kind of see.

A mummified hand of another saint.

Panoramic view of San Marco square

Pano of the lagoon to the south.

Bells in the Carillon.

Domes of the Bascilica.
