St Pierre's Cathedral

We stayed at a lovely hostel right on St. Pierre's cathedral square.  The church is built on top of the hill in Geneva where some of the earliest settlements in the area occurred.  It is the site of at least 3 different church constructions, with this one being the latest.  It was the home church of John Calvin and thus very important to the Reformation in Europe.

This is our hostel.  Its mostly a boarding house for women who are living temporarily in the city (many of whom are international interns with various UN agencies).  There were two large dormitory rooms where our whole group stayed - a bit crowded toward the end of the trip, but everyone in the group has gotten along so well it was not a problem.  The building is designated historic, so they are not able to do many changes to the interior (and definitely not the exterior), so it looked almost identical to what we remembered from our last stay here 8 years ago.

Ceiling in the Chapel of the Macabees at the cathedral.   The main sanctuary had very little adornment, obviously Protestant, not Catholic.  Very different feel than the Vatican obviously.

We saw a lot of stairs like this on the trip.  If you can climb it, I'm there!

We could access two levels in St. Pierre's.  The tall arched openings above the rosette window, and the smaller ones above it.

Beautiful view of the jet d'eau (fountain)
This man was cleaning the gutters on the roof of the cathedral...with no safety harness!
