This trip was rather unusual because I ended up booking mostly discount hotels instead of youth hostels for our lodging. The differences are not great, but there are differences. Both had rooms that were dormitory style, and some of the hotels had shared toilet and shower facilities between rooms. We only had to strip the sheets off our beds at the hostel, but it was also the only place where breakfast was included in the price of the room.
In Geneva we actually had 12 women in one room and I worried that at the end of the trip this would cause tension, but we had a great time and ended up playing games as a group each night with the guys joining us as well.
