Library of Congress

Determined to see everything we could, after we toured the Capitol building we walked through the underground passage to the Library of Congress.
The architecture is beautiful

The main reading room.  There are over 3 million volumes in the library.  Most of the original collection was destroyed by the British in the War of 1812.  The current collection started with the purchase of Thomas Jefferson's entire collection of 6,487 books.  We got to see a display with these books.  The originals were specially marked, with replacements (acquired from other sources) also marked, and some additional markers for those volumes that are missing entirely.  

David actually did some research in this room during his days at Penn State...
